I was born on October 31, 1974 in Mammoth, California. Anybody who lives in California knows that Mammoth Mountain is one of the best ski resorts in the world. I started skiing at the age of 2. My dad would tie a rope around my waist and then send me down the mountain while he skied right behind me and held me upright with the rope. Of course, I don't remember any of this. It is only what I have heard.
I lived in Mammoth all the way through high school. It was a great place to grow up, but I always wanted to see the big city. Watching TV and movies made me feel like I was missing the bigger part of the world. I knew I wanted to go to college right after high school, so I worked hard for good grades. I also was class president one year and played on the football team for three years. Obviously I skied and snowboarded all the time. We had this program called "Ski PE" in the winter months, where we would get out of classes at 1:00 PM and hit the hill for the rest of the day. It was awesome.
I was so influenced by the movies that I decided I wanted to go to the Air Force Academy after watching "Top Gun". I did everything necessary to get accepted there, and that is where I ended up 5 days after high school graduation. I stayed in the Air Force for four years while earning my "wings" as a flight instructor. I also did my first parachute jump during this time. After I left the military I moved to San Luis Obispo, California to finish my degree in Aeronautical Engineering. On the weekends I would go skysurfing and occasionally "canal surfing", where my friends and I would surf in a nearby canal while being pulled by a car.
After I finished my degree, I moved to Phoenix to work as an aerobatics flight instructor and practice skysurfing at a great drop zone out there. By this time I had heard about the ESPN Extreme Games and was setting my sights on that. I had a video partner, Vic, and we started training full time. We went to that first Extreme Games in Newport, Rhode Island, and took fifth. From there we just kept on plugging away. Eventually we were ranked #1 in the world and things started to happen fast.
I started to do a number of different commercials and other stunt work. I completely enjoyed every moment of it. I eventually moved to Huntington Beach, where I just sort of hung out and learned to surf. I actually started to slack off a little bit there since it is such a mellow place. One day I got a phone call from MTV to audition for a new show called "Senseless Acts of Video." I really liked the concept for the show and was crossing my fingers that I would get the job. But I did not get called back right away, so I assumed I lost out on that one. But I actually got called back over a month later and was told I got it. I was stoked! We shot the pilot show in the summer of 1999 and when it aired it was a total success. We got picked up as a series and that is what I am doing today. I am now living in Los Angeles.
My mom and dad (Dottie and Dennis) still live in Mammoth and just play every day. My dad is basically retired but still owns a couple of small businesses since that is what he loves to do. My younger sister, Heidi, also lives in Mammoth and is happily married. She works nights so that she can ski all day in the winter and go into the backcountry in the summer. She kicks ass as a sister and would blow me away on the slopes any day. I actually got Heidi to learn to skydive. She doesn't do it anymore but has about 15 jumps. My mom and dad have none. I am trying to talk them into doing a tandem skydive with me. I doubt it will ever happen.
